Micron Technology (Micron (MU)) is going all in on the future of memory. On Thursday, the company unveiled Micron Research Labs, a U.S.-based research institution designed to push the boundaries of memory and AI technologies. This isn't a small project; it's backed by a planned $10 billion investment spread over the next 10 years.
Micron is positioning this as the first dedicated memory research hub of its kind in the U.S. The flagship campus will be in Boise, Idaho, and will focus on critical memory technologies, advanced memory and computing architectures, packaging, and future semiconductor manufacturing. The idea is to create a connected research network that spans universities, global satellite labs, and the broader semiconductor ecosystem, all aimed at technologies that go beyond the next generation for the AI era.
Construction on the advanced facility is expected to begin in 2027, and it will have space for hundreds of researchers. Micron's Chairman, President, and CEO Sanjay Mehrotra highlighted that this builds on more than $250 billion already committed to U.S. manufacturing and R&D, reflecting the company's confidence in AI's long-term potential.
Now, let's talk numbers. Micron's stock is currently at $923.00, which is about 3.8% above its 20-day simple moving average (SMA) of $894.74, but 3.5% below its 50-day SMA of $962.32. The Relative Strength Index (RSI) sits at 51.90, which means the stock is in a neutral momentum phase, not overbought or oversold. The stock is also well above its 200-day SMA of $563.69, showing a strong long-term trend. However, the 20-day SMA being below the 50-day SMA is generally seen as a bearish signal.
For traders, the key levels to watch are resistance at $1012.00, a nearby level where rebounds could stall, and support at $891.50, where buyers have previously stepped in, aligning with the 52-week low zone.
Looking ahead, Micron is slated to provide its next financial update on September 22, 2026 (estimated). Analysts are expecting an EPS of 31 cents, up from 3 cents year-over-year, and revenue of $50.81 billion, up from $11.31 billion year-over-year. The stock carries a P/E of 21.2x, which suggests a fair valuation.
The analyst consensus is a Buy rating with an average price forecast of $1537.50. Recent analyst actions include Citigroup maintaining a Buy but lowering its target to $1150.00 on Aug. 7, Keybanc raising its target to $1750.00 with an Overweight rating on July 14, and Cantor Fitzgerald raising its target to $2000.00 with an Overweight rating on June 29.
For ETF investors, Micron is a significant holding in several funds. The Invesco PHLX Semiconductor ETF (SOXQ) has an 8.91% weight, the State Street SPDR NYSE Technology ETF (XNTK) has an 8.14% weight, and the Invesco AI and Next Gen Software ETF (IGPT) has an 8.71% weight. Because MU carries such heavy weight in these funds, any significant inflows or outflows for these ETFs will likely force automatic buying or selling of the stock.
At the time of publication on Thursday, Micron shares were up 0.60% at $942.47.
