President Donald Trump's pick to run the Food and Drug Administration is already hitting political turbulence, and it's not coming from Democrats this time. On Wednesday, Senate Health Committee Chair Bill Cassidy (R-La.) publicly questioned whether Dr. Heidi Overton is the right person for the job, pointing to her role in the administration's recent vaccine order as a major red flag.

Cassidy's Concerns: Experience and Science
"While I respect Dr. Overton's experience as a physician, I have strong concerns about her nomination to be FDA Commissioner," Cassidy wrote on X. His committee will oversee Overton's confirmation, so his stance carries weight. Trump formally announced Overton as his FDA pick on Wednesday.
Cassidy didn't mince words. He argued that Overton's "lack of managerial experience" doesn't prepare her to lead a large agency that's already "dealing with staffing and morale issues." But the bigger sticking point for Cassidy is her involvement in what he called "last week's nonsensical vaccine executive order." He said it raises doubts about her commitment to "sound science and protecting children's health."
"That alone is almost disqualifying," Cassidy added.
The Vaccine Order: A Flashpoint
The controversy centers on Trump's Aug. 10 executive order that seeks to separate the combined measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine into three separate shots. This goes against the recommendations of major medical groups, which have long supported the combined vaccine for its safety and efficacy. Overton stood beside Trump at the Oval Office event when the order was signed.
Trump has called Overton a "rockstar" and said, "We need her leadership at the FDA now to ensure that the U.S. remains the WORLD LEADER for Scientific Discovery and CURES." Overton, who serves as White House deputy domestic policy director, has become a trusted health-policy figure in the administration and a supporter of Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s Make America Healthy Again agenda.
The debate over splitting the MMR vaccine isn't new. Medical experts and drugmakers like Merck have already voiced strong opposition, citing decades of evidence showing no link between vaccines and autism. The order, however, has given critics like Cassidy a concrete reason to question Overton's judgment.
Overton Would Inherit a Troubled FDA
If confirmed, Overton would step into an FDA that's still reeling from significant upheaval. The agency has lost more than 3,000 employees and has seen a revolving door of leadership. Reuters reported that drugmakers and agency staff have questioned whether her management background is sufficient for an organization destabilized by layoffs and senior exits.
The turmoil isn't new. Earlier reporting detailed White House plans to remove Marty Makary before he resigned in May. Days later, acting drug-center chief Tracey Beth Hoeg was fired and said the order came from "way above."
Overton's resume includes a stint as chief policy officer at the America First Policy Institute and training at Johns Hopkins, where she overlapped with Makary. If confirmed, she would become the latest physician to lead the FDA.
The question now is whether Cassidy's concerns will translate into a tougher confirmation fight. With Republicans holding a slim majority, Overton can't afford to lose many votes from her own party. Cassidy's public skepticism suggests the road ahead won't be smooth.
