Intel Corp. (INTC) shares ticked higher on Monday, riding a wave of tech strength that lifted the Nasdaq by about 0.5% while the S&P 500 slipped 0.1%. The move comes as investors weigh a mix of bullish long-term signals against a murkier near-term technical picture.
On the fundamental side, Bank of America is doubling down on Intel's foundry turnaround story. The bank's analyst Vivek Arya noted that the company's roughly $20 billion equity raise signals greater management confidence in both internal demand and external foundry customer engagement, even if it means near-term earnings dilution. The firm sees Intel potentially capturing 8% to 10% of a roughly $380 billion wafer foundry market by 2030, with Intel Foundry revenue climbing from about $1.1 billion in 2026 to nearly $40 billion by 2030.
Technical Analysis
Technically, Intel is in a bit of a tug-of-war. The stock is trading 6.5% above its 20-day simple moving average of $97.14 and 5% above its 100-day SMA of $98.48, but it's still 5.3% below the 50-day SMA of $109.23. That suggests a rebound that hasn't yet reclaimed a key intermediate-term trend level.
The moving averages themselves are sending mixed signals. The 20-day SMA sits below the 50-day SMA, pointing to near-term weakness, but the 50-day remains above the 200-day, keeping the longer-term bullish trend intact. Meanwhile, the relative strength index stands at 52.47, a neutral reading that suggests the stock is neither overbought nor oversold.
Support is holding near $89.50, a level where buyers have previously stepped in.
Analyst Outlook
Wall Street's take on Intel is cautiously optimistic. The stock carries a Hold consensus rating with an average price forecast of $110.56. Recent moves include UBS maintaining a Neutral rating and lowering its price target to $112 on Aug. 12, Bank of America keeping a Buy but trimming its target to $145 from $160 on Aug. 11, and Baird raising its target to $125 while holding a Neutral rating on July 27.
Momentum and ETF Exposure
Intel's momentum profile is notable. It scores a 98.61 on the MarketDash Edge scorecard, indicating strong relative price performance versus the broader market. But that momentum-heavy profile also puts a spotlight on whether Intel can sustain its recent trend.
For ETF investors, Intel is a significant holding in several tech and semiconductor funds. It accounts for 5.53% of the iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX), 5.12% of the iShares MSCI USA Momentum Factor ETF (MTUM), and 5.86% of the State Street SPDR NYSE Technology ETF (XNTK). That means large inflows or outflows from these funds can directly influence Intel's share price.
