U.S. Central Command chief Adm. Brad Cooper is pushing back on the narrative that the USS Abraham Lincoln is in crisis. Speaking after a visit to the carrier, he said the ship currently has "among the lowest" number of mental health cases across the Navy's 11 active aircraft carriers, defending the crew's resilience after more than 260 days deployed amid scrutiny over conditions aboard the ship.

Cooper Praises Crew Amid Mental Health Scrutiny

"My time aboard USS Abraham Lincoln yesterday was awe-inspiring," Cooper said Sunday. "I wish every American could see the crew in action. You would beam with absolute pride when witnessing their camaraderie, teamwork and resilience."

The Lincoln left San Diego in November 2025 and later shifted to the Middle East to support U.S. operations in the Iran war. The carrier, with roughly 5,000 sailors and Marines, has gone more than 200 consecutive days without a port call, a modern record according to Democratic lawmakers.

Cooper acknowledged the strain. "This doesn't mean that all is perfect," he said, adding that extended service at sea is "uniquely challenging and tough."

Navy Pushes Back On Reported Shipboard Problems

His remarks follow reports of food shortages, water contamination, plumbing problems and mental-health struggles. The Navy said it has not identified an increase in reported suicidal ideation or suicide attempts aboard the carrier. House Democrats nevertheless called the allegations "deeply troubling".

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth also pushed back last week, calling reports of deteriorating conditions "completely misrepresented." He praised sailors working in "austere conditions with less port calls."

The deployment grew out of Washington's military buildup against Tehran. President Donald Trump in January called the Lincoln-led force a "massive Armada" headed toward Iran. By late April, the Pentagon estimated the war had cost roughly $25 billion, largely for munitions.

Cooper said leaders had prioritized mental, physical and spiritual health and that previously raised food and hot-water problems had been resolved.

Lincoln Nears Relief After Extended Iran Mission

Relief now appears closer. Trump said on Friday that the Lincoln would soon be "replaced with another very similar ship." Reuters, in a report that day, noted that the USS George Washington is heading to the region in a pre-planned move.

"To all our Sailors and Marines aboard the ship, keep up the great work and fair winds and following seas on the journey home," Cooper said.
