President Donald Trump is at it again, and this time he's got his sights set on the clock. On Saturday, he urged the Senate to pass legislation that would put an end to the twice-yearly time change, reigniting a push to keep the country on one time standard all year round.
Trump Pushes Senate to End Clock Changes, Citing 'Disruption and Chaos'

The House Has Already Done Its Part
The measure in question cleared the House last month with a solid 308-117 vote. If it becomes law, daylight saving time would become the universal standard across the nation, meaning no more springing forward or falling back.
Trump took to Truth Social to make his case, writing: "The Senate must vote on the NO MORE CHANGING THE CLOCKS ACT as soon as possible. More sun later in the day is better (including for fighting crime!), but, even more importantly, NO MORE RIDICULOUSLY CHANGING CLOCKS AND WATCHES TWICE YEARLY, with all of the disruption and chaos it causes. FINALLY, GET IT DONE!!!"
This isn't the first time he's weighed in. In an earlier post, he called on Senate Republicans to "PASS THE SUNSHINE PROTECTION ACT, ASAP." But here's a wrinkle: it's not entirely clear if Trump's "NO MORE CHANGING THE CLOCKS ACT" is the same bill or something different. That particular name hasn't shown up in previous reports about the legislation.
Supporters of the change argue that an extra hour of evening sunlight could give a boost to retail, tourism, and restaurant spending. But past Senate hearings on the bill haven't exactly produced a consensus.
This whole push has a familiar ring to it. Back in 2022, the Sunshine Protection Act sailed through the Senate unanimously, only to stall in the House, which never brought it up for a vote.
As for when the Senate might act this time around, there's no timeline set yet.
If you're wondering why this matters beyond the annoyance of resetting your microwave, consider this: a 2024 study by Virginia-based Chmura estimated that the clock change costs the U.S. economy a whopping $672 million each year. That's driven by sleep disruption, traffic accidents, and workplace injuries. The firm broke it down further, attributing $375 million of that to heart attack-related medical costs and $252 million to strokes triggered by the time shift.
So, while the debate over whether to keep the sun shining later in the day continues, the costs of the current system are nothing to sneeze at. Whether the Senate will finally get it done remains to be seen.
