Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Ltd. (NYSE:TSM) is having a good Wednesday. The chip giant's stock rose nearly 2%, riding a firmer market wave that lifted the Nasdaq by 0.9% and the S&P 500 by 0.3%. The Russell 2000 and Dow also joined the party, gaining 0.4% and 0.1%, respectively.
But it's not just the market's mood that's helping. TSM is also hovering near its 52-week high, which tends to keep buyers interested as long as pullbacks stay shallow. When a stock is this close to its peak, it can feel like a breakout is just around the corner, and that psychology often fuels more buying.
Record Revenue on AI's Back
The fundamental story is just as compelling. On Monday, the company reported July revenue of NT$467.58 billion, a whopping 44.7% jump from the same month last year, and up 5.6% from June. For the first seven months of 2026, revenue climbed 37% to NT$2.872 trillion. That's the kind of growth that makes investors sit up and take notice.
And it's not just a one-off. Last month, Taiwan Semiconductor raised its 2026 capital spending forecast to a record $60 billion to $64 billion, a clear signal that it expects AI chip demand to keep booming. When a company is willing to pour that much money into expansion, it's betting big on the future.
Technicals: A Mixed Bag
From a technical standpoint, TSM is in a strong long-term uptrend. The stock trades 18.9% above its 200-day simple moving average of $362.18, which is a solid sign of underlying strength. It's also 5.1% above the 20-day SMA of $409.76 and 1.2% above the 50-day SMA of $425.72, suggesting the recent rebound has pushed the stock back above key intermediate trend lines.
But here's the catch: the 20-day SMA is still below the 50-day SMA. That bearish crossover indicates the stock hasn't fully recovered from its recent correction. It's like the stock is climbing a staircase, but it hasn't quite reached the landing where all the trend lines align.
Momentum, however, is improving. The moving average convergence divergence (MACD) is above its signal line, and the histogram is positive, pointing to growing buying pressure. That's a good sign for bulls.
Key resistance sits near $477, close to the upper end of the 52-week range, while support is around $385.50. If the stock can break through that resistance, it could open the door to new highs.
Analysts Are Bullish
Wall Street is largely on board. The stock trades at a price-to-earnings multiple of about 31.9, which isn't cheap, but analysts see more upside. The consensus rating is Buy, with an average price target of $552. Recent moves include:
- Bernstein maintained an Outperform rating and raised its price target to $554 on Aug. 11.
- Needham maintained a Buy rating and raised its target to $530 on July 27.
- DA Davidson maintained a Buy rating and lifted its target to $500 on July 17.
These aren't just hold ratings; analysts are actively raising their targets, which reflects growing confidence in the company's AI-driven growth story.
Quality and Growth, But at a Price
Taiwan Semiconductor scores impressively on several key metrics. Its Momentum score is 87.65, Quality is 97.57, and Growth is 85.73. These numbers highlight strong business fundamentals and stock performance. However, its Value score is a lowly 25.89, which means investors are paying a premium for those strengths. That's not necessarily a bad thing if the growth continues, but it does mean the stock could be more vulnerable to disappointment.
ETF Exposure: A Double-Edged Sword
TSM is a major holding in several exchange-traded funds, which can amplify its moves. The VanEck Semiconductor ETF (NASDAQ:SMH) has a 9.16% weighting in the stock, the Nicholas Crypto Income ETF (NYSE:BLOX) has an 8.09% weighting, and the Lazard Emerging Markets Opportunities ETF (NYSE:EMKT) has a 7.45% weighting.
That sizable weight means significant ETF inflows or outflows can create additional buying or selling pressure in the shares. So, when investors pour money into these ETFs, TSM gets a boost, and when they pull out, it can drag the stock down.
Price Action
At the time of publication on Wednesday, TSM shares were up 1.84% at $429.83, according to market data. The stock is trading near its 52-week high, and with strong revenue growth, bullish analysts, and improving momentum, it's a stock that's hard to ignore.
