If you thought your group chat was busy during the World Cup Final, imagine handling 30 million messages in a single second. That's exactly what Meta Platforms (META)'s WhatsApp pulled off during the big match — a new record for the messaging app.
CEO Mark Zuckerberg pointed to the milestone while talking about how WhatsApp is becoming a key piece of Meta's AI puzzle. Turns out, WhatsApp is now the top place where people interact with Meta AI. The company is also rolling out AI-powered business agents on the platform, and more than a million businesses are already using them each week to chat with customers and close sales.
But WhatsApp wasn't the only Meta app setting records. Zuckerberg also revealed that Instagram now has two billion daily active users, and Threads has grown to 500 million monthly active users. Meta AI itself saw daily active users jump 60% after the Muse Spark upgrade — a sign that AI is driving engagement across the whole family of apps, not just the standalone assistant.
All this scale is impressive, but it also raises questions about how Meta will keep the momentum going — and whether the market will reward it. Meta's stock is taking a hit today, so investors are clearly watching closely.
