Salesforce (CRM) stock is having a strong Tuesday, jumping 4.71% to $181.78 as of publication. The catalyst? A massive $1.6 billion federal AI contract, some encouraging enterprise AI monetization data, and a broader market rotation out of semiconductor stocks and into enterprise software. The Nasdaq is down 0.68% today, but the S&P 500 is up 0.34%, so the rotation story has some legs.

Federal AI Contract Surge
The big news is that Salesforce secured a $1.6 billion, three-year Agentic Enterprise License Agreement with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The company announced Friday that the deal will deploy agentic AI, Slack, MuleSoft, Data 360, and Tableau to modernize care for more than 17 million veterans. That's a serious vote of confidence from the federal government and a nice chunk of recurring revenue.
Sector Rebound Dynamics
Software stocks are broadly higher today, even in the face of a profit warning from IBM (IBM). The sector is getting a lift from strong earnings reports from SAP (SAP) and ServiceNow (NOW), according to market data. Apollo Chief Economist Torsten Slok also chimed in Monday, noting that capital is increasingly flowing to foundational software companies that provide the data pipelines and computing infrastructure powering generative AI. That's a nice tailwind for Salesforce and its peers.
Earnings In Focus
Salesforce is set to report fiscal second-quarter results on September 2. Analysts are expecting earnings of $3.09 per share, up from $2.91 a year ago, on revenue of $11.31 billion, compared with $10.24 billion last year. The stock carries a consensus Buy rating with an average analyst price target of $238.43. Recent analyst moves have been mixed: Morgan Stanley downgraded CRM to Equal-Weight on July 21 with a $185 price target, CLSA initiated with a Hold and $165 target on July 20, and Evercore ISI Group maintained an Outperform rating on July 14 but cut its price target to $250.
Critical Levels To Watch for CRM Stock
Technically, Salesforce is showing some short-term strength. The stock is trading 9.6% above its 20-day simple moving average of $167.37, 7.5% above its 50-day SMA of $170.65, and 3.3% above its 100-day SMA of $177.52. However, it's still 10.9% below its 200-day SMA of $205.98, which tells you the longer-term trend remains negative. The moving average setup is still bearish: the 20-day SMA is below the 50-day SMA, and the 50-day SMA is below the 200-day SMA. That structure suggests the broader downtrend hasn't reversed yet.
Momentum indicators are looking better. The MACD is above its signal line and the histogram is positive, indicating buyers have taken near-term control. Key levels to watch: resistance at $211.50, near the 200-day moving average, and support at $156.50, a previous buying zone above the 52-week low of $146.32. If CRM can break through $211.50, that would be a strong signal that the trend is turning. For now, it's a nice bounce, but the real test is still ahead.
