Billionaire investor Ray Dalio said Friday that the Iran war's outcome hinges entirely on the Strait of Hormuz, warning a decisive clash is imminent.
"It All Comes Down to the Strait of Hormuz: the Final Battle," the Bridgewater Associates founder wrote in an X post.
Dalio noted he shared an article explaining his outlook when the war began, adding "now it is clear that it is happening and we will soon have the final battle and its result." That earlier piece argued any continued Iranian leverage over the strait would hurt Gulf allies, global oil flows and the dollar's reserve-currency status.
His recent post came shortly after U.S. Central Command struck Iranian drone storage sites, following Tehran's reported rejection of a cease-fire proposal.
In March, Dalio compared the situation to the 1956 Suez Canal Crisis. He argued that if the U.S. fails to secure the strait, it could signal the start of American imperial decline, similar to the setbacks experienced by Britain, the Dutch Empire, and the Spanish Empire after their own defeats. Dalio has previously said such moments determine "whether the empire survives or falls," warning that capital and confidence naturally shift away from the losing power.
In April, Dalio compared the Iran war to a 13-step historical cycle that he follows. He placed the conflict at "Step 9," a stage defined by simultaneous fighting across multiple fronts. He warned that no leading power in history has successfully managed wars on multiple fronts at the same time.
The U.S. and U.K. are reportedly planning a London conference to build an international coalition to protect Hormuz shipping, even as President Donald Trump nears a decision on a possible "massive attack" on Iran.
According to reports, three ships have been seized by Iran since the war began, including two MSC container vessels and a tanker linked to Greek shipping magnate George Prokopiou.
