President Donald Trump is at it again, warning that if the U.S. doesn't stay on top of cryptocurrency, China will happily take the crown. Speaking at the Ratepayer Protection Pledge event on Thursday, Trump doubled down on his "America First" stance, insisting the U.S. is leading in crypto—but that lead is fragile.
"We're leading China and all other countries by a lot in AI and just about every other, including crypto. We want to stay in front in crypto," Trump said. "They'd love to take that over."
It's a familiar refrain. Since his 2024 campaign, Trump has used China as a boogeyman to justify pro-crypto policies, claiming Beijing is trying to get "big" into the sector. But here's the thing: there's not much evidence that China is actually competing in crypto—at least not in the way Trump suggests.
Beijing has been anything but friendly to crypto. Between 2013 and 2021, it issued a series of restrictions that ultimately banned all cryptocurrency transactions and mining. In September 2021, China's central bank formally declared all digital-asset trading illegal, and providing such services to Chinese citizens from abroad is also prohibited. Just last November, the central bank reaffirmed its enforcement, specifically voicing concerns about dollar-pegged stablecoins.
Instead of embracing decentralized crypto, China has gone all-in on its own central bank digital currency, the Digital Yuan. So while Trump warns about China taking over, Beijing's actual policies suggest they're playing a very different game.
Meanwhile, crypto has been very good to Trump personally. Financial disclosures show he earned roughly $1.4 billion from crypto ventures last year, including from World Liberty Financial and the Official Trump (CRYPTO: TRUMP) memecoin. That's drawn criticism from those who see a conflict of interest—especially when the president is shaping crypto policy. Trump and the White House have denied any wrongdoing.
So is China really a threat to U.S. crypto dominance? Or is it just a convenient narrative? Either way, Trump is making sure the conversation stays focused on staying ahead—and on his own crypto riches.
