Bristol Myers Squibb (BMY) is making a serious bet on artificial intelligence to speed up drug discovery. The pharmaceutical giant is deploying an NVIDIA (NVDA) DGX SuperPOD equipped with the latest DGX Vera Rubin NVL72 systems, creating what it says is the most powerful and energy-efficient single-owned AI infrastructure in the life sciences industry.
This isn't Bristol Myers' first AI move. Back in May, the company signed a strategic agreement with Anthropic to deploy AI across its operations, giving more than 30,000 employees access to institutional knowledge through Anthropic's models. Now, with this hardware upgrade, they're taking things to the next level.
The new Vera Rubin architecture is a big leap forward. According to the company, it delivers up to 10 times more performance per megawatt than the previous generation. That means researchers can run larger and more complex AI models while actually improving energy efficiency—a win-win. The deployment extends a collaboration between Bristol Myers and NVIDIA that has already spanned nearly three years.
So what will all this computing power be used for? The enhanced capacity will support research across several therapeutic areas, including oncology, cardiovascular disease, immunology, hematology, and neuroscience. Using the new computing cluster and NVIDIA's BioNeMo biological AI platform, Bristol Myers plans to train next-generation foundation models on decades of proprietary research data.
The company has also adopted what it calls a "Predict First" approach, where AI-generated predictions help shape experiments before any lab work begins. Bristol Myers says AI now supports the design of every small-molecule drug program and most large-molecule development projects. The goal is to improve decision-making from target identification all the way through clinical proof of concept.
This announcement follows another AI-focused partnership from May, when Tempus AI (TEM) and Bristol Myers agreed to use AI, multimodal real-world data, and advanced analytics to improve clinical trial design. That collaboration focuses on five initial oncology and neuroscience development programs, aiming to increase the probability of technical and regulatory success.
As for the stock, Bristol Myers shares were up 0.30% at $60.92 at the time of publication on Monday, approaching their 52-week high of $62.88.
