President Donald Trump is giving a shout-out to Giant Eagle for slashing prices on over 300 products, saying it shows his push to lower costs for American families is working. And he's not stopping there—he wants every other grocery chain to do the same.
In a Sunday post on Truth Social, Trump announced that Giant Eagle would cut prices on hundreds of items through Labor Day. "Wonderful news! I have just been informed that Giant Eagle, a GREAT American Grocery Company, will be lowering Prices, by a lot, across more than 300 products this Summer, through Labor Day, to help hardworking American families," he wrote.
Trump compared Giant Eagle's move to price-cutting efforts by Walmart Inc. (WMT), saying both companies were answering his call. "Giant Eagle, like Walmart, is stepping up in a big and bold way to answer my call to lower costs for working families," Trump said. He also claimed that prices for oil, gas, eggs, and prescription drugs are falling fast, crediting his administration while taking a swipe at former President Joe Biden's economic policies. "We will continue to bring Prices DOWN, just like Oil, Gas, Eggs, and Prescription Drugs, all of which are dropping FAST," Trump wrote. He added, "Other Grocery Chains must immediately follow the lead of these absolute Patriots at Giant Eagle and Walmart."
But not everyone is buying the optimism. Democratic lawmakers and economists have been pushing back, arguing that inflation pressures remain a real problem for American households. Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) pointed out that Trump's wealth has increased by $1.4 billion while wages haven't kept up with rising prices, squeezing workers' purchasing power. Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) also criticized Trump's "I love the inflation" remark, noting that many Americans are still struggling with higher costs for essentials like gas and groceries.
Investor Ross Gerber blamed government policies for fueling inflation concerns and bond market volatility, while economist Peter Schiff argued that rising deficits and Federal Reserve policies—not tariffs or geopolitical tensions—pose the biggest inflation risks.
So while Trump is celebrating price cuts as a win for his agenda, critics warn that the broader economic picture is more complicated. For now, Giant Eagle and Walmart are the golden children, and the pressure is on other grocers to follow suit.
