Vice President JD Vance highlighted the lasting significance of the Declaration of Independence, saying its language continues to shape American identity through what he described as self-evident truths that require no explanation.
On Saturday, in a post on X and remarks during a Fox News interview, Vance reflected on the power and simplicity of the founding document, arguing that it presents its core principles without academic or philosophical elaboration.
"It does not pause to explain who this Creator is. It doesn't explain what the equality of men means. It doesn't try to go into details about the consent of the governed. It simply declares these truths to be self evident," Vance wrote in his post.
During the interview, he added that the Declaration's impact comes from its clarity and historical purpose. Vance said, "What has become standard American parlance, they had never heard those words before," referring to Revolutionary War-era audiences. He added, "It wasn't written for historians. It wasn't written for academics. It wasn't written for the generations to come. It was written for the people of this fledgling country."
Vance also said the document reflected a shared identity forming at the nation's founding, calling it "an expression of the American mind" intended to communicate directly to citizens and soldiers of the era.
Billionaire investor Ray Dalio described U.S. success over 250 years as an "impossible dream come true," saying he once considered such long-term stability "virtually impossible" given the nation's diverse immigrant roots and democratic system.
Former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif) emphasized that the founders left behind an "unfinished" democratic mission, calling on future generations to continue building a "more perfect Union." She said democracy depends on civic participation, faith, and charity, stressing that the "work of democracy is never finished."
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) celebrated the United States as the "greatest country in the history," crediting the Declaration's signers and "Divine Providence" for establishing a republic based on liberty.
