If you're planning to have a baby this year, you might want to time it right. The Social Security Administration announced Wednesday that newborns born during America's 250th birthday celebration will get a first-of-its-kind commemorative Social Security card. It's a limited-edition keepsake that will feature the official Freedom 250 logo in black ink, but it works exactly like a regular card.
The special cards are for babies born between July 2 and Dec. 31, 2026. That's a six-month window that starts today. If your little one arrives before July 2 or after Dec. 31, or if you need a replacement card, you'll get the standard version. No exceptions.
"Freedom 250 is a celebration of America's storied history and the monumental moments that have shaped our nation, including the creation of Social Security over 90 years ago," SSA Commissioner Frank J. Bisignano said in a press release.
The best part? You don't have to do anything extra. The SSA says the commemorative cards come at no additional cost to families or taxpayers. Parents won't need to apply or register separately. The cards will be issued automatically through the standard birth registration process used at hospitals, birthing centers, and through licensed midwives.
But the agency also has a warning: watch out for scams. The SSA will not call, text, or email parents asking for payment or extra personal information to issue the commemorative card. If someone contacts you claiming to be from the SSA about this, it's a scam.
This limited-edition card is part of a broader Trump administration push to brand the 250th anniversary with collectibles, federal designs, and public events. Freedom 250 is a public-private effort backed by the administration, separate from the congressionally created America250 commission established in 2016.
Last week, Trump unveiled a limited-edition "Patriot Passport" featuring his likeness as part of a commemorative passport program. That follows other anniversary-linked items, including a proposed Trump-themed $1 coin and a 24-karat gold coin design featuring the president.
So if you're expecting a baby this year, you might get a little piece of history along with the diapers and sleepless nights. Just don't expect to sell it on eBay — it's still a Social Security card, not a baseball card.
