Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) took aim at President Donald Trump on Monday, accusing him of pushing fossil fuels for profit while the planet suffers through record-breaking heatwaves.
In a post on X, Sanders highlighted a Washington Post report about soaring temperatures in Europe. "Countries across Europe just saw their hottest spring on record and are now seeing another record heatwave," the Vermont independent wrote. "Trump wants MORE fossil fuels and carbon emissions. He is putting the planet and future generations at risk for the profits of his Big Oil friends."
This isn't the first time Sanders has called out Trump on climate. He's previously accused the president of downplaying the crisis as global temperatures rise and emissions policies get relaxed.
Sanders isn't alone in his criticism. Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA) recently accused Trump of deliberately trying to derail California's electric vehicle push. "One year after gutting California's ability to set its own clean air standards," Schiff said, adding that Trump was "killing EVs and allowing more tailpipe emissions." Trump had earlier rolled back greenhouse gas emission standards for cars and trucks, calling the original policy a "disastrous Obama-era policy" that "severely damaged the American auto industry."
Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) has also gone after Trump, accusing him of helping oil companies profit from the war in Iran. She pointed to executives at companies like Chevron Corp. (CVX), noting that CEO Mike Wirth made over $104 million since the Iran war began.
The criticism comes as Europe swelters under another heatwave, following its hottest spring on record. For Sanders and other Democrats, the connection is clear: Trump's policies are making the climate crisis worse while enriching his allies in the oil industry.
