New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani (D) says the Democratic Party has lost its way on the economic issues that matter most to working-class Americans. In an interview that aired Saturday on MS Now, he called for a sharper focus on housing, healthcare, and gas prices as the 2026 midterms approach.
“The party, as a whole, has lost its focus on working people,” Mamdani said. “People want to know: What are you going to do for rent? What are you going to do for housing? What are you going to do for gas? What are you going to do for groceries? We have to have answers to that.”
Policy, Not Ideology
During the interview, Mamdani argued that the party's priorities should center on housing affordability, healthcare costs, and rising gas prices. He said ideological debates are a distraction from the everyday “kitchen-table” issues most Americans are dealing with.
Party Still Searching for Direction
His comments come as Democrats face a broader leadership crisis. DNC Chair Ken Martin has faced calls to resign over his handling of a post-mortem on former Vice President Kamala Harris’s 2024 loss to President Donald Trump. Former DNC Vice Chair David Hogg and Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) have both demanded new leadership.
Mamdani’s profile surged after he upset former Gov. Andrew Cuomo in the NYC mayoral primary. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) called his win “one of the great political upsets in modern American history.” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent called the first South Asian mayor in New York City history “clearly the leader of the Democratic Party.”
Mamdani’s growing stature was on display when former President Barack Obama visited a Bronx childcare center in April for their first face-to-face meeting since the election.
With midterms less than six months away, Democrats are under pressure to unify around both a message and a leader.
