Key Republican senators are sounding the alarm over a potential peace agreement with Iran, warning it could undermine U.S. military gains and empower Tehran. The deal, which President Donald Trump says is nearing completion, has sparked fierce opposition from GOP lawmakers who see it as a dangerous concession.

Wicker: Ceasefire Would Gut Operation Epic Fury
Senator Roger Wicker (R-Miss.), chair of the Senate Armed Services Committee, took to social platform X to voice his concerns. He said a rumored 60-day ceasefire would be a disaster, especially after the joint U.S.-Israel military operation known as "Operation Epic Fury."
"The rumored 60-day ceasefire — with the belief that Iran will ever engage in good faith — would be a disaster," Wicker posted on X.
His point: if the U.S. and Israel just went through a major military campaign to degrade Iran's capabilities, a quick ceasefire could let Iran off the hook and waste those hard-won gains.
Graham: A Nightmare for Israel
Senator Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) piled on, warning that the deal could shift the Middle East's power balance in Iran's favor. He argued that if Iran retains the ability to disrupt the Strait of Hormuz — a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments — it would be seen as a dominant force, forcing others to seek diplomatic solutions on Iran's terms.
"This combination of Iran being perceived as having the ability to terrorize the Strait in perpetuity and the ability to inflict massive damage to Gulf oil infrastructure is a major shift of the balance of power in the region and over time will be a nightmare for Israel," Graham said.
President Trump announced on Truth Social that a deal with Iran is nearing completion, but details remain scarce. The potential agreement reportedly involves Iran surrendering its enriched uranium, a key condition, and could reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
Cruz Also Sounds Alarm
Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) has also expressed concerns, labeling the potential deal a "disastrous mistake" if Iran continues uranium enrichment. His remarks, shared on X, highlight fears that the agreement could reverse U.S. military gains and offer concessions to Iran.
Trump has indicated that the peace deal has been "largely negotiated" with multiple Middle Eastern countries, including Saudi Arabia and the UAE, as part of a broader effort to stabilize the region.
For now, the GOP opposition is clear: any ceasefire that doesn't fully neutralize Iran's nuclear and military threats is a non-starter. The debate is far from over.
