President Donald Trump is reportedly mulling a new addition to the White House grounds: a helipad. The goal? To keep the South Lawn from getting scorched by the new, more powerful Marine One helicopters.
According to the Wall Street Journal on Sunday, the helipad would be built to accommodate the VH-92A Patriot, a beefy new helicopter that's set to replace the aging VH-3D Sea King. Both choppers come from Lockheed Martin's Lockheed Martin (LMT) Sikorsky division. The timeline for the helipad's construction is still up in the air.
The problem with the VH-92A? It's too hot for the lawn. Government reports dating back to at least 2018 warned that the helicopter's engines and auxiliary power unit could damage the White House grass. Unlike the older VH-3D, which lands on protective boards, the VH-92A's exhaust can scorch the ground in hot, dry weather. It also carries a lot more weight—6,200 pounds more than the VH-3D.
The Marine Corps had planned to retire the VH-3D this year, but delays with the VH-92A mean the old workhorse will keep flying until at least 2027.
Trump is also expected to install a helipad at his Mar-a-Lago residence this summer, per the Journal.
The White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
